Perseverance is the strength to endure challenges and overcome obstacles, even when the path forward seems impossible. It is the unwavering belief in oneself, combined with a determination to achieve one’s goals. Tony Williams embodied this spirit of perseverance throughout his life, achieving remarkable success despite the barriers he faced. His unwavering commitment to supporting Indigenous students and contributing to their educational journeys remains an enduring legacy.
Tony Williams dedicated many years to The Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation, serving as a supporter, director, treasurer, and board chair. During his time with PBI Actuarial Consultants, he provided actuarial and investment consultation to many First Nation Settlement Trusts and other trust funds. In retirement, he continued his dedication to the Kirkness Foundation and established several bursaries for Indigenous students. He also served on many councils, boards and associations including the University of Manitoba Alumni Council, the Dean of Science’s External Advisory Board, and the Wawatay Advisory Board, which supports Indigenous students.
In memory of Tony Williams and in recognition of his perseverance, The Fred and Karen Green Fund of the Vancouver Foundation has generously donated the funds to establish these scholarships. We are honored to offer two annual scholarships of $2,500. Two student scholarships will be awarded each year for a minimum of 10 years
Students are invited to apply with the attached application form, which includes the requirement to write a two–page essay showing how the student demonstrates perseverance, determination and the overcoming of obstacles and challenges. The recipients of the award will be chosen by a selection committee from The Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation.
